4th Annual Las Vegas Women in Technology Awards
The 4th Annual Las Vegas Women in Technology Awards are presented to acknowledge the tremendous contributions in the technology sector made by women in the greater Las Vegas metro area. Nominated women represent many aspects of technology industries including Information Technology (IT), Computer Engineering, Startups and Entrepreneurs. The award categories include: High Tech Woman of the Year, High Tech Rising Star, High Tech Community Service, High Tech Entrepreneur and High Tech Mentor.
Newly added this year, the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) will present the Aspirations in Computing Program award to recognize young women interested in technology and computing.
Although U.S. women represent half of the college-educated workforce and continue to grow in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields, they remain under represented and make up only 29% of the science and engineering industry; per ngcproject.org/statistics. Las Vegas leads the way, according to a recent article in Fastcompany.com article with the startling figure that 64% of Nevada’s tech workforce is comprised of women.
Lori Nguyen, herself a local Tech entrepreneur, says Las Vegas is in the top 20% of cities in the U.S. when it comes to women working in technical fields. She would still like to see that percentage go higher. One way to make that happen? “More young girls between the ages of 13 and 18 need to engage in Stem programs”. These programs are the backbone of succeeding in technology driven careers.
This year’s nominees are currently being judged. Each of the nominations will go through a battery of judges and winners will be announced June 2nd. For more information on The Las Vegas Women in Technology Awards event and sponsors go to http://www.vegaswomentechawards.net .
