UNLV Turns 60

The University of Nevada Las Vegas celebrated its birthday today, with the traditional cake, music, and a spirit rally led by students.

The University got its start sixty years ago this week, and a week of festivities has been planned to honor the occasion.

Dr. Len Jessup, President of UNLV, said, “It’s really fun that we’re celebrating the 60th on the very day that US News magazine calls us the most diverse campus in the country. Pretty exciting.”

The past sixty years have been six decades of steady growth for the university, which has gone from a small facility to a major research center with a law school and a medical school.

Today’s events included a DJ, dance numbers by UNLV’s cheer and pom teams, the school band, and a cake-cutting ceremony. But there are more festivities planned.
